Understanding Mediation
At Conflict Revolution, we define mediation as a process in which a third party supports people in conflict to engage in a conversation that can transform the quality of their interaction from destructive to constructive. Through this process, participants have the opportunity to discuss and explore what matters to them, better understand their own perspectives and the perspectives of others, and consider possibilities for moving forward. Navigating conflict can be challenging, and you likely have questions about how mediation can help. We've gathered some of the most common inquiries to provide clarity and comfort as you consider your path forward. Discover how Conflict Revolution supports understanding and productive interactions.
What are some benefits of mediation?
Mediation creates space for people to have conversations that may feel too difficult to have on their own.
Through mediation, people may be able to:
- Better understand their own experience and what matters most to them.
- Feel heard and have their perspective understood.
- Gain insight into the other person’s experience.
- Slow down conflict and move beyond assumptions and blame.
- Explore options and decide what moving forward looks like.
- Improve communication and navigate future conflicts with greater confidence.
- Find clarity and a path forward, even when they do not fully agree.
When might mediation be helpful?
People come to mediation when something feels stuck, communication has broken down, or a conversation feels too difficult to have on their own.
Mediation can help when:
- A relationship has been impacted by conflict or unresolved issues.
- Communication with a family member, friend, colleague, or partner feels difficult.
- People are having the same disagreements over and over without moving forward.
- There are different perspectives, needs, or concerns that are hard to navigate.
- A workplace relationship or team dynamic feels strained.
- Something important needs to be discussed, but it feels challenging to begin.
- People want support having a conversation where each person can be heard and make choices about what comes next.
Mediation is not about deciding who is right or wrong. It creates space for people to better understand what is happening, hear each other differently, and decide how they want to move forward.
What are common worries people have about mediation, and how do you address them?
Many people come to mediation wondering: Will I be heard? Will I be blamed? Will the other person listen? Will I be forced to compromise? What if we don’t agree? Could this make things worse?
At Conflict Revolution, we understand these concerns. Conflict can leave people feeling uncertain, stuck, or unsure of what will happen next.
At Conflict Revolution we practice Transformative Mediation. It does not ask people to set aside their experiences or move toward a particular outcome. Instead, the mediator supports a process where each person has the opportunity to make choices about how they participate, share what matters to them, with the goal that participants better understand their own experience and the experience of the other person.
Agreement is not required. The purpose of mediation is not to decide who is right or force resolution, but to support people in having the conversation they need to have and choosing what moving forward looks like for them. Agreement and resolution often happen but it is not the goal of the mediation.
What are the biggest advantages of choosing mediation through Conflict Revolution?
At Conflict Revolution, mediation is not about deciding who is right, assigning blame, or forcing an agreement. We believe conflict is a crisis in human interaction — a moment when communication breaks down and people struggle to understand themselves or each other.
Our role is not to control the conversation or determine the outcome. We support you to have the conversation you need to have, in a way that works for you. Through mediation, we help people: feel heard and understood; slow things down and explore what is really happening; better understand each other's perspectives; identify what matters most beneath the conflict; and explore options and decide what comes next. You remain in control of the process and the outcome. Our role is to create the conditions for a meaningful conversation that can lead to greater clarity, understanding, and a path forward.
Can you describe the general steps someone would go through during a mediation process?
The mediation process at Conflict Revolution begins with connection, where we understand your situation and determine if mediation is the right fit. Next, in the preparation phase, each person meets privately with the mediator to share their experience, identify what matters, and prepare for the conversation.
During our time together, the mediator supports the conversation by creating the conditions for people to engage with conflict in their own way. The mediator does not direct the conversation or determine the outcome, but supports each person’s ability to stay connected to their own experience, make choices, and respond to the conflict in ways that feel meaningful to them.
You choose what you want to share, what you want to explore, what you want the other person to understand, and what steps, if any, you want to take moving forward.
Why does supporting self-determination matter in mediation?
At Conflict Revolution, we believe people are more capable of navigating conflict when they have the ability to make their own choices about how they participate.
Mediation is not about directing people toward a specific outcome or deciding what should happen next. It is about creating the conditions where each person can better understand their own experience, consider the perspective of the other person, and choose how they want to respond.
When people have a sense of agency and self-determination, they are better able to engage in meaningful conversations, make decisions aligned with what matters most to them, and move forward in ways that feel authentic, empowered, and sustainable.
What if one person doesn't want mediation?
Mediation is voluntary and sometimes the other person may not be ready or willing to participate in mediation.
In those situations, I offer conflict coaching as an alternative support.
Conflict coaching is a one-on-one process that helps you:
- Make sense of what is happening in the situation
- Get clearer about what matters most to you
- Understand your options and next steps
- Think through how you want to respond
- Build clarity and confidence in how you move forward
It does not require the other person’s participation, and it can still support meaningful shifts in how you experience the conflict.
Is Conflict Revolution covered through my work or personal benefit package?

How many sessions does the mediation process usually take?
How many sessions does the mediation process usually take?
Every conflict is different, and the number of sessions depends on the people involved, the complexity of the conflict, and what participants hope to explore or accomplish.
Most mediation processes take approximately 3 sessions, with each session lasting about 2 hours. Some situations may also benefit from additional one-on-one sessions between mediations to provide support, prepare for conversations, or help participants reflect on the process. More complex conflicts may require additional time and support.
